"If she cries, the whole world dies."
This is the story of a young girl named Meg,
who ends up lost in the Underworld, and a
monster named Roy, who'll have to keep
her safe, and help her find her way home.
Here, you can enjoy a taste of the game's
memorable soundtrack, composed by
Reo Uratani, and get a peek behind
the curtain as to how it was made.
I've always loved
the night sky.
But there's one star
that shines brighter
than all the others...
And every time I gaze
up at it, I get this funny
feeling in my chest.
Which music do you want to listen to?
Salvage Yard
???
Monster Village
Roy's House
Flower Field
Salvage Yard
"Where am I…?"
Junk used : stones / metal rods / deck brush / sneakers and wooden planks, etc.
One of the game's most iconic tracks, meant to convey the true depths of the Underworld. Dark, foreboding phrases from the piano and cello are syncopated by the rhythm of metal and stone being beaten together to create a sense of tension and contrast.
Hey, get this! I heard the strings for this game's soundtrack were recorded in a studio in Boston!
???
"Th-Thtay away!
Thith belongth to me!!"
Junk used : pot lids / deck brush on tatami mats / metal sticks / gravel / broom / oil drum / a “safety first” sign, etc.
All of this game's battle themes revolve around junk-based percussion.
Here, the kick-drum sound is made by hitting a deck brush on a tatami mat, and pot lids take the place of your usual snares. You can also here what sounds like a triangle chime in here—but make no mistake. All you're hearing are plain old metal bars.
Granny thaid thith one'th a little "jazzy"... I dunno what that'th thuppothed to mean, though.
Monster Village
"I hereby call this monthly
council meeting to order!!"
Junk used : tatami mat / gauntlets / granola, etc.
A track meant to convey the atmosphere of a long-winded meeting between four council members who just can't reach a consensus.
You might be forgiven for thinking those are jazz-style drum brushes you're hearing, but in fact, it's just an ordinary broom.
It seems there's an easter egg hidden in the album's Japanese track listing... But you'll have to convert the song titles into Hiragana to find it! Oho!
Roy's House
"Hey, kid. You're not some 'Harbinger of Ruin' or whatever, are you?"
Junk used : tableware / coasters / granola, etc.
Before Meg showed up, Roy's house was little more than a desolate cave, but now it's finally starting to feel like a home. That was the main idea I wanted to convey with this track; I used forks, teacups, and glasses to create a lively rhythm for a lived-in space.
What's that? Too much piano in the soundtrack for ya? Well, according to the composer, it was a CHOICE to limit the game's intstrumentation! Helps make the whole tracklist feel cohesive, y'know what I mean?
Flower Field
"People always talkin' about hearing ghosts out here... Or how it messes with your head and stuff..."
A song that plays during some of the game's most iconic scenes.
There are actually two different variations of it in the game itself.
Did you notice?
Hey, guess what! Almost every song in Meg’s Monster is based on a single melody! Isn't that neat?
Main Concept
To recapture
the true essence
of video game music
in a way modern games
just don't
Pure x Polluted
-
Pure
A Young Girl
When arranging the soundtrack's instrumentation, I decided to only use instruments that create clear, gentle tones like pianos and violins. I deliberately chose not to use anything harsh or distorted, like electric guitars or synths.
-
Polluted
Underworld
In many ways, the Underworld is like one massive junkyard. As such, I made all of the game's rhythms using garbage cans, pot lids, and other bits of discarded human debris, rather than traditional percussion instruments. I called this process "Garakuta Recording."
But how come…?
Please don't go, Roy!
